Dog Harness Size Guide – How to Measure Your Dog
A good harness fit starts with accurate measurements. Measure your dog while standing naturally, then compare the measurements with the size chart on the specific product page. Harness sizing varies by model.
Use a soft measuring tape. Keep it close to the body without pulling it tight, and measure over the coat as your dog normally wears it.
What to measure
1. Chest girth
Measure around the widest part of the chest, behind the front legs. Keep the tape level around the body. Chest girth is a key measurement for many harnesses, but always follow the measurements requested for the specific model.
2. Neck
Measure around the lower part of the neck where the harness is designed to sit. This is usually lower than the position of a collar. Do not add a fixed amount to the measurement unless the product instructions specifically tell you to.
3. Head circumference — when required
For harnesses that are put on over the head and do not open fully at the neck, check whether the product size chart asks for head circumference. The opening must be large enough to pass comfortably over the widest part of the head.
Check the fit
- The harness should stay in position without twisting or sliding excessively.
- Straps should not press into the body or rub behind the front legs.
- Your dog should be able to move the shoulders and front legs naturally.
- Adjustable straps should have enough adjustment range for a secure, comfortable fit.
- After adjusting the harness, check the fit again while your dog stands and moves.
Do not automatically choose the larger size. Compare all relevant measurements and the adjustment range shown for that specific harness. The better option depends on the model and your dog’s proportions.
Common measuring mistakes
- Choosing a size mainly from breed or body weight.
- Measuring too loosely or pulling the tape tight.
- Measuring the neck at collar height instead of where the harness sits.
- Using a general size label such as S, M or L without checking the product-specific measurements.
Use this guide to take the measurements correctly. Then return to the product page and compare them with that product’s own size chart. Size labels are not universal between brands or harness models.
