Dog Collar Size Guide – How to Measure Your Dog

The right collar size depends on your dog’s actual neck measurement and the adjustment range of the specific collar. Measure first, then compare the result with the size chart on the product page.

Before you start

Use a soft measuring tape and have your dog stand or sit naturally. Measure where the collar will actually sit, without pulling the tape tight.

How to measure for a collar

1. Measure the neck circumference

Wrap the measuring tape around the neck at the position where the collar normally sits. Keep it close to the coat but do not compress the neck or pull the tape tight.

2. Check the collar’s adjustment range

Compare the measured neck circumference with the adjustment range stated for that specific collar. Do not add a fixed number of centimetres unless the product instructions specifically require it.

3. Check the fit after adjustment

The collar should sit securely without pressing into the neck. You should be able to slide your fingers comfortably between the collar and the neck, while the collar should not be so loose that it can easily slip over the dog’s head.

Fit check

  • The collar should not restrict normal breathing or movement.
  • Check that buckles, rings and adjustment parts do not press uncomfortably against the neck.
  • Recheck the fit regularly, especially for growing dogs or after major coat changes.
  • The correct fit depends on the collar design as well as your dog’s proportions.
Between two sizes?

Do not automatically choose the larger size. Compare your dog’s neck measurement with the full adjustment range of both options. Choose the size that allows a secure fit with useful adjustment room.

Slip and semi-slip collars

These collars can require different measurements from a standard buckle collar because the collar may need to pass over the dog’s head and then tighten to its intended position. Follow the measurement instructions and size chart provided for the specific product.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Choosing a size mainly from breed or body weight.
  • Adding a fixed amount to the neck measurement without checking the product instructions.
  • Choosing only by a general label such as S, M or L.
  • Not checking the fit again after the collar has been adjusted on the dog.
The product size chart decides the final size

Collar sizing is not universal. Use your dog’s measurement together with the adjustment range shown on the specific product page before ordering.
